High School Senior, Spencer Perron, Graduating from Cretin-Derham Hall. A little about him and his school. He plans on attending The University of Madison. A very cool College. Were he will be taking up International Business. Spencer has been busy with his landscaping business and has saved up enough to purchase his own Motorcycle and Truck. Jack and Jill, Rites of Passage Ceremony, 2010, Andrews-Photography documents the ceremony of 20 young men on the path to success. We do not know all the men's stories or what they have done before but after the ceremony. We have no doubt that they will attain whatever they set out to do. Here is just two group images of the young men.

The 15x30 image was taken prior to the ceremony. The image is available only as a 15x30 or larger if you would like email me direct or call with questions before you order.

The second image is a 5x20, we can order larger images but the smallest would be the 5x20 print or gallery wrap.

A Gallerwrap is a print canvas stretched over a wooden frame, pretty cool you don't need a frame. Very cutting edge.

Jack and Jill Organization Event: Rites of Passage

Andrews Photography has been working now on this Event for the last three years. We have noticed a trend in the event. The amount of time invested in each Initiate. Time is now the most expensive commodity we have. Rites of passage has put i the time with each one of these young men. Jack and Jill is a essential catalyst for the future. Without this program I think many young men would be left behind.

Many quotes come to mind to back up the ideal of such programs. "It takes a village to raise a child". If so then let us pray for more such villages as the Jack and Jill Rites of Passage. These 20+ young men have and forever will feel the reassurance that someone took the time to care for them. They will think back when things get tough, that they have some one to call besides there family. Someone who took the time to set them on a path to live beyond what they could hope for. Ceremonies of becoming a adult of leaving behind the things of your childhood and taking the reins of adulthood are needed.

Every Society has "Rites of Passage", Spanish customs for a young girl are referred to as a "Quincetta". When she is considered old enough to take up the commandments and be an adult. The Jewish Community has a similar ceremony the Bar Mitzvah. I have been to many such ceremonies and have noticed a definite change in each individual partaking in the process and ceremony. The Rites of Passage is needed in every community to help these young men weather the storm of being a man.

Rites of passage has done a fantastic job of being flexible and changing with the times. They strive to be better each year and should be commended for their drive and conviction. I am sure they put in many more hours then needed. They proceed out of love to these young gentle men to help guild them down there path.

The grand ceremony the impending event, without this there would be no drive, no catalyst for these initiates to do better. Without the mentors there would be no one guide to spur them on. I hear that a few of these young men do not have fathers or male role models. What a gift to them then to have someone to look up to. If the program can elevate one individual save one person from going down a path he could have otherwise side stepped. Then it is a success for all.

Instead, we follow the action, moving around unobtrusively, virtually unnoticed, searching for the meaningful moment — the emotional father-daughter dance, friends embracing, grandparents beaming, kids being kids. A little bit about Isabelles day, We were not able to photography any of the ceremony on this occasion. Doug her father, had a great plan in place though and we captured some fantastic photos of Isabelle around the temple before the ceremony. Lots of fantastic friends and family interaction too.

Thanks To Doug and Lynn for booking us to document their daughters special day. At Andrews Photography we love going beyond client expectations. 5 minutes in to the Artistic Portraits, Doug commented on our style, "he though we would just snap a few photos and be done". The Twin Cities Professional Photographers Association, presented Rod Andrew Wilson. Of Andrews Photography with this years Wedding Photographer of the Year Award. Rod entered 4 prints from past weddings and each print received a merit, a 81-87 out of a 100.Andrews Photography picked through many weddings and images. The four he choose were based on the 12 points of a merit.

Rod also received the Top wedding Image Award for 'The Bridal Party" The Bridal Party scored a nice 87 out of a 100. Thanks Jen and Eric for having such a wonderful day to document.

Each Month TCPPA gave out a word and The photographers in the group had to come up with there best rendition of the word. Everyone in the group then saw the image the next month and voted on there favorite image. Rod only entered 9 months but came away with the top award, The runners up were Rod Oman and Rod Radke. We had a chance to take Photos of Sasha a High School Senior from North High. Only one hiccup to the session, she forgot her favorite red Jacket. Dad to the rescue he must have been in a jet car or something he only took 15 minutes to get here. Dominoes eat your heart out. We shot some on the way back to the studio and finished up in studio. Rod tried something new at the end of the session and it turned out to be Sashas favorite. See the sepia hard edge light photo. Very bold and dynamic look.

How does your High School Senior see her or himself? Much of the session is determined in the attitude of the senior as the arrive. Sasha commented during the first 15 minutes of the session that this wasn't what she expected. She though it was going to be, hey just take a seat here do this smile, your done. Lots of smiles and comments on wow Rods a bit goofy followed. Glad she had fun that's what the experience is all about. Be prepared come happy and well do the rest.

Some personal work just walking around trying out new things and came upon this Balloon Arch at the Farmers Market in Saint Paul. Just up the street from were I live in the Tilsner Building.

Andrews Photography a 10 minute headshot for Singer / Song Writer Aram "AJ"

A local Singer Aram or "AJ" was in need of some head shots for one of his auditions. This guy tried out for American Idol. He met the performers to Kooza at Elbario in Saint Paul. Hung out with the Newkids on the block when they were in town at Mickeys dinner. The man is out their having the time of his life. Sings with two local bands and has time for Mass every Sunday. Sometimes he even has time to return a call.

He said, "Rod just a quick headshot please." this is what he got 10 minutes later.
One thing though if your doing a 10 minute shoot, don't be late. Oh ya he over slept, good thing We have plenty to do while waiting for sleepy head. We think he figured.... since I don't have to do my hair?

Danami "musician", Headshots in Saint Paul, Andrews Photography Danami needed a few head shots done of himself. For his cd release party and of course his new LP out this fall. He also needed a silhouette shot with some art placed inside. Danami found images that meant something to him. A few famous persona's that had a impact on his life. Plus we added a few of him in there too. Fun headshots in under 2 hours. We did two clothing changes and 4 slight lighting changes to make this shoot work. Danami had a clear idea of what he wanted and he got it and more. This image is going to make one killer poster! Andrews Photography is always up for something new and engaging. This helps our grey matter expand.

Andrews Photography decided to start the shoot out with some hard directional light. Less is more kind of thing. Then we did a few fun poses with some emotion and topped it off with him adjusting his hair. We got a few great photographs of him doing his thing. Danami really knew how to move in front of the camera, thanks for bring the emotion.

We used a few tricks from my fashion routine, ringflash, low angle, wide lens, hard side light, and of course Rod Andrew behind the lens.

Andrews Photography, Dry Mate, Product, Commercial photo shoot. We did a nice photo shoot for Mike Bachman. The product was a Dry Mate mat. Pretty cool item keeps the kitty litter off the floor. Mike rented 3 kittens for the shoot and brought a kitten wrangler. Way to go Mike best shoot we have ever done with kittens. Katrina was nice enough to send over the finished product with our photos in them. Commercial shoots are a lot of fun this one was a breeze. Andrews Photography hits the jackpot. Glady and Frank were kind enough to invite us into there home to snap a few family portraits of them interacting with there pets. The dogs were on there best behavior or was it just plain good parenting. We walked through what the family did on a day to day basis. Just to see how they all interacted with each other. Soon your junior will be a HS Senior, and it is time to select a photographer for senior portraits. Too often parents are confused or misinformed about the process of having senior portraits created. Dont worry were in your corner.

As a professional photographer whose specialty is Senior Portraits, I have prepared this guide to help you be better informed about the senior portrait process and help you make a wise investment.

Please remember this guide's most important messages:
1). Your school's contracted photographer must take ONLY your yearbook picture. Your real senior pictures are your choice.
2). A senior portrait is a once in a lifetime experience. A MAJOR milestone. Expect personalized service from the studio you select! Make this a positive experience!
3). Review samples of work from a studio either on their web site or at a no obligation visit to the studio before selecting a photographer.

Here is a list of the most common questions we are asked when discussing senior portraits with parents:

Q. When should you schedule the senior portrait session?
A. Don't wait until your senior year! Deadlines for submitting yearbook pictures are always in the fall, so most seniors are photographed in the spring before the senior year. We get calls from seniors from local high schools asking to be photographed in July and August. Because of the personal attention we give each of our seniors, there are only a limited number of sessions times available. We offer "early booking" promotions to encourage students to schedule their appointment early!

Q. Why do so many seniors choose Andrews-Photography for their senior portraits?
A. Quality, creativity, reliability, experience, professionalism, service, variety, beautiful headshots, black and white photography, sepia toned images, color tints, etc. etc... We'll do whatever you want us to do- go Downtown Minneapolis? No problem. Saint paul? Find a huge open field? Your High School Theater? Anything...(well, within reason).. We just had to add this video of the most recent first year photo shoot we did for Nolan. Portraits of kids eating cake doesn't get any easier than this. He was a natural at eating cake and having a good time. Must take after his dad, mom was worried about him getting messy.

Nicole, Model shoot in Saint Paul. MN. Nicole braved the cold weather and did a few sets outside. We even did a set at the Blackdog cafe, we all bought a drink but they still didn't like us shooting in the cafe. Andrews Photography set up a glamour shot modified set up with a soft box and reflector. Rear light was warm gelled and balanced for the main light. We used a ring light for the wine background. Nicole will be back in a few months for her H.S. Senior Photos. Andrews Photography cant wait. She was a dynamo in front of the camera and had a winning smile. Niobium wanted something dark and tribal. Maybe a bit forgotten. Well we turned a drap tight living room upside down and gave it new life. Andrews Photography armed with a tripod, camera and wink flash turned a living room into a lava pit. the faces pop and ther is no shortage of darkness. Driving yesterday to a photo shoot and I saw these work cranes. The symmetry was mesmerizing I had to turn around and grab a photo. Light, repetition and bold color. Hi folks, Rod here I got a chance to capture a few great images of one cool kid this weekend on location. Please watch the video, sorry about the bad crop but just had to set the camera on the floor for this take.

Watch out world Bridget tuned one and she does not like cake. Maybe after her party she will be more inclined to like cake. The day was great and Bridget was fantastic she was laughing and playing around. she loves her butterfly and balloons. when her mom blew bubbles she made a few faces. Its pretty cool watching kids find out about life right before your eyes. I wonder if she will remember The portrait sessions. I think back to when I was young and my mom brought us in for a portrait session. All I wanted to do was play with a ball and throw my sisters shoes across the room. I think I was 5 and my sister was 4, I still have that 8x10. My sister with one shoe on and me with a little grin. It was the last time we saw that photographer.

The official start to the Holidays, Andrews Photography captures Santas arrival! Andrews-Photography was out at Woodbury Lakes on Saturday the 22nd for Santas arrival. The fun started at 4:15pm and folks were already having a blast at the games and face painting. Families having fun petting the reindeer and taking carriage rides around the mall. The activities tent was jammed with people making cards and decorating gingerbread men. One kid was brave enough to start eating his gingerbread man by biting off the head first. It was hard to see the kids smiles under all those parkas but you could hear there laughter. The cold tried to dampen there spirits but with all there was to do it was hard not to keep warm. Free mini donuts were also provided as fast as the elves could make them. Between the good cheer, frosty the snowman, and hot chocolate how could you not have fun.

It was nearing 7:00 pm and the kids were starting to get a bit fidgety waiting for old saint nick. You could feel the energy in the air something big was going to happen. Then the sleigh was sighted on I-94 heading towards the mall. but per FAA regulations Santa had to land in the parking lot due east. Woodbury police and fire met him there to safe guard the sleigh and refresh the reindeer. Then it was off to the party riding in first class style aboard a Fire Engine. He was escorted up to light the tree and say a few words to the crowd. The fireworks popped and the crowd cheered. Santa told me later that it was the best welcome he had all month and Woodbury Lakes was the place to be and be seen. I asked him what he likes best about christmas and he replied "why its the season of giving and it feels so good to help out my fellow man". If you haven't taken your kids to see old saint nick check out the Woodbury website for times and dates.

Other news, Macys is running a benefit for every Santa letter dropped off, they are giving a $1.00 to there Charity of the year.

I got three shots of this chimp driving and then the person in the back came up and took over. Guess the guy was just taking a breather while his Chimp played chauffeur. Talk about crazy, Oh and this image will be used as stock. If you need a Monkey driving a orange hummer call me! I tracked him down too his name is Mickey, we talked for hours. He mentioned that he had just gotten his class b license back. OK, How compelling is this kids eyes. Can you see the soul of this child or what. Relationship photography is the study of the subject and who they are. Smile photos are fun to get but when you are invited in to see a child's true persona it is truly a gift. I feel blessed every day that I have clients that see the value in a wall portrait that displays there child's inner self. Makayla is only 14 days and full of expressions already. Most kids just sleep and that was what we were going for in the second photo. Glad she woke up to show us a bit of herself before falling back to sleep. Andrews-Photography was fortunate enough to photograph Matt and Molly's Wedding in Wabasha, MN. Being a destination Wedding we arrived 2 hours early to scout out great romantic backgrounds. I had many great fun non traditional ideas for there wedding . If you would like to see the whole wedding please view them on this link.Password is Mattmolly. We can do allot of art overlays and add certain elements based on each clients needs. When you need your portrait to have that little extra wow factor. That added depth or emotion. A great example of bridal input, we have a bride next year that will be doing her invitations in calligraphy. She found the idea of adding her penmanship to parts of the album and images intriguing. Using old poems or letters in the images are great ways to personalize too. Andrews Photography does custom album design in house without templates each album is an original and why would you want anything else.

Here is an example of Color, tinting eyes and flowers and just tinting the eyes.

We did a cool set of old covers with there hot passionate shot in the alley. This will definitely be the cover to her small 4x6 romantic book. I think I finally went with the last cover, it was lighter in color and the names really pop. I will be printing all three though just to make sure though. What a beautiful start to their story together.

Corey Cook set this model shoot up for his soon to be fiancee Carley. He wanted to capture the moment on film when he presented her the ring. Corey said,' It was so hard trying to keep this secret and she wanted to talk about marriage all week and I was just like oh god I cant wait to surprise her during the shoot at Andrews Photography". You can see the snow on the ground but thank god we didnt get hit to bad. The bride and groom were fantastic. They kept there mind open and braved the 32 degrees outside for two sessions. Total time outside 15 minutes, portraits of fun and total use of the surroundings priceless. Why rent a place and only use half of it. Cold you bet, you can see the small snow flakes in the group shot. What a great group of people, they would have done anything for the bride and groom that day. Sarah and David thanks again for adding another hour before the ceremony. I think the extra time really helped us capture all the romantic photos you could have wanted.

The Rake Head Shot Frank Sander

This is a photo of one of my good friends Frank Sander a local artist. He is now up for the Bush Grant for the arts. Way to go Frank! This is the only guy I know that can pull off vertical and horizontal stripes in the same outfit. His publicist said this was one of the best photos of Frank she had ever seen.

Andrews-Photography went to the circus. We got a few photos of the Shriners Circus this last Saturday. What happened to the circus folks? Were is the excitement and the fun. The kids I saw had fun and it would have been cool to feed the elephant. Not alot of performers but wait, there was a shining star. The first picture the guy on the tight rope his act was fantastic and he did a bit with his assistant that involved juggling and a whip, nice stuff. Wish I could have met him he was great! a true entertainer. I would go back just to see him again. We couldnt get a whole lot of photos from our seats but I hope you enjoy what we did get. Here's the thing: We love shooting weddings. We also love to travel! Anytime, anywhere. But you know how it is...when you're on vacation you feel like you should be working, or when you're working you wish you were on vacation! Thankfully, there's a perfect solution:

DESTINATION WEDDINGS!

Every year we set aside Five weekends exclusively for this "free wedding photography" promotion. Aside from a few basic restrictions, there are no strings attached to this offer. Having said that, here are a few strings:

1) It should be scheduled between November and March.

We live in Minneapolis. This Nov - Mar period could accurately be called our off-season. So sure, we'll shoot your wedding for free! As long as you meet requirement #2, which is:

2) It should be someplace WARM and not in Minnesota!

In Minnesota, between November and March, it's probably wet and cold outside. Let's get away to Florida or Cancun or New Zealand or something. Work with us here. Sunny and warm. You probably want that too, right? We're willing to consider not-so-warm locations as long as they are, well, cool. Venice during Carnivale? Sure. NYC on New Years Eve? Okay. Paris in the springtime? Absolutely. And finally, requirement #3:

3) You cover the COST of travel and accomodations. We do the rest.

Airplane tickets, a hotel and some food. Any associated transportation, to-and-from. Tips for the bellhops and waiters. That's it! Well-rested, excited photographers will give you REALLY good photographs. That's all you have to cover, and we don't mark it up with bogus "day rates" or first-class fares. Get us there, put us up at your hotel and we are ready to rock. We'll probably need 4 or 5 nights accomodations, depending on the scope of the project. If we stay longer, it's on our dime.

Is it really that simple?

Yes it is. Look, we've done destination weddings, and they are always beautiful. But sometimes, frankly, it's a stretch for our clients to be able to fly two professional photographers to the Caribbean and to pay full price for the photography package. So this is a pretty good deal. And there are other benefits too:

• Destination weddings don't have the same time restrictions as our regular packages. In other words, we'll be at your disposal for the rehearsal AND all the way through the wedding. The day after the wedding, if you'd like to go out and get some "extra" portraits (on the beach...under a waterfall... on a jet ski...top of the Eiffel Tower) without having to worry about your dress, WE'RE THERE!!!

• If you live in Minneapolis but wish to have a destination wedding, it will be much easier to do all of your post-production wedding album stuff with us a local photography studio. (If you live outside of Minneapolis, then ignore this point. We're easy to work with regardless of your home base.)

• With Andrews Photography you won't be stuck with some cheesy, unknown, in-house, trainee STAFF photographer shooting your lovely wedding! Wouldn't it be better to retain the services of a known and trusted company? These are your WEDDING photos, after all.

Sunday was a fantastic day thanks for all that attended the "Portrait Session For Your Pets". For those who didnt here is a little bit of what we did. Andrews Photography scheduled a open day were you could bring your dogs in for there portrait session. the sitting was free and the owners could order on line. Here a few examples of the great looking canines we had a chance to photograph. What a great bunch of dogs and kudos to there handlers for there excellent control. Dog portrait sessions can get out of hand quickly if you dont have those extra set of hands. We do a open call just one time a year and take private sessions through the year. So please call ahead of time to secure your date and time. Dont forget about those family photos with your family pets too. Andrews photography always keeping an eye on safety and excellence.

Engagement Session Andrews Photography

Even in March, Andrews Photography, Jon and Andrea were able to get out and enjoy the light. What a great day for shooting, soft even light that makes your skin and eyes glow. This is a great example of our extended engagement session. The couple wanted a few studio shots, some outside photojournalistic, and of course everyone likes ice-cream. Jon couldn't help but get her in the nose with the pralines and cream.

Tips for great engagement sessions

1. Be yourselves and try to have fun
2. Wear something casual and stay away from white and black, Jon has a good example of dark charcoal, which photographs really well for guys, dark blues work well too.
3. Dress for the day if it is cold wear a sweater
4. Try putting him in darker hues than you, he will naturally frame you in the photo
5. Listen to your photographer a few cues to follow and you will be cute in your portraits
6. Higher the same photographer for the engagements and wedding, it is a great way for him to get to know you

Embassy Suites Hotel Minneapolis-Airport won the coveted Go for the green award for excellence in all departments. I was hired to document a cross section of there events festivities. I have included some of there great food photos and celebration photos. The day was packed with green and the deserts were to die for. Nice touch with the bagpiper and the leprechaun.
